Polyurea is a type of elastomer (a polymer with the property of “elasticity”) that is derived from the reaction of an isocyanate component and a synthetic resin blend component. Polyurea was developed utilizing traditional polyurethane technology combined with newly developed chemical components and its use is relatively new in the market place. These new chemical compositions display much superior physical properties than its polyurethane precursors, especially being hydrophobic (allowing for curing in the presence of water) and exhibiting much higher temperature resistance.
Furthermore, pure Polyurea coatings are eco-friendly, non-toxic, and contain no VOCs or solvents. In fact, many Polyurea coatings are NSF/ANSI 61 certified for use in potable water storage applications.
Key areas where Polyurea Spray Elastomers can provide effective solutions:
- Corrosion Resistance on both Concrete and Steel
- Primary & Secondary Containment
- Hazardous Materials Containment
- Abrasion Resistance
- Roof & Floor Protective Coatings
- Waterproofing
- Structural Reinforcement
- Seismic Reinforcement
- Tank, Water Storage, and Aquifer Linings
- Water Features and Pond Liners
- Earth Containment & Erosion Resistance
- Aquariums – many of the world’s aquariums are now using polyurea lining technology
Chemical characteristics of Polyurea provide much faster reaction periods yielding much quicker gel, tack, and cure times critical to containment, pipeline, tank and other coating applications while providing the desirable cold-temperature applicability and unlimited film build-ups. Polyurea also has excellent chemical resistance to many acids and gases, provides for very low permeability ratings, and has the ability to achieve UV stable colours.
With proper surface preparation in accordance with SSPC / NACE / ISO standards, an applied Polyurea system will bond to a variety of different substrates, such as metal/steel, wood, concrete, fibreglass, plastic, rubber, and polyurethane foam, and will provide significant protection in waterproofing, abrasion & corrosion control, immersion and lining applications. Furthermore, application formulations can be engineered to meet client specific requirements.
In corrosion, chemical, and abrasion environments, empirical evidence shows that Polyurea coatings out perform traditional coating systems used in industrial settings and are used as an alternative to rubber, epoxy, polyurethane, fibreglass and other lining systems.
Polyurea’s major benefit is its fast set nature, often less than 20 seconds. It can typically return an area to service many times faster than traditional coatings, allowing the owner to put the facility back in use without days and weeks of revenue losing down-time. Almost no coating can compare to Polyurea when it comes to attainable physical properties including high elongation, abrasive resistance, superior tensile strength, and hard or soft characteristics.

Effective in Vapor, Air, and Moisture Barriers
SPF reduces moisture infiltration by reducing air leakage
SPF reduces sound transfer into buildings. Most sound from outside the building is carried into the building through cracks and air leaks. SPF by stopping the air infiltration also helps keep sound out.
Spray Polyurethane Foam, commonly known as SPF, is derived from the reaction of an isocyanate component and a polyol resin component. When the two liquids are combined, a chemical reaction occurs which creates a rigid or semi-rigid foam. SPF components are mixed at high or low pressures using a spray gun and the reacting mix is sprayed onto the substrate. The mixed liquid expands many times its original size and, once cured, solidifies to form polyurethane foam that adheres well to the area it is applied to, providing a seamless seal. SPF is commonly used as an insulator in many industrial applications.
